Let's start at the top and go down from there. Again, with our smart object selected in the layer window, we're going to go to Filter > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen. But with more options you get more freedom to get the desired effect. Smart Sharpen is a bit more elaborate than Unsharp Mask is. ^ (Garden of words, sharpened with above settings in unsharp mask) Basic sharpen: Smart sharpen You don't need a lot of sharpening, if any at all, majority of the time. In this example from the Garden of Words, which is a scenery gif, you can see I only sharpened a little bit. Depending on what I'm giffing this could be lower or higher. With any of the sharpen filters, I won't go over 200% in amount, 0.03px in radius and 5 in levels. Setting the threshold too low will give you a grainy look on low-contrast areas, and will make noise stand out. Sharpening low-contrast areas (like a baby's smooth skin) makes them look rough and speckly. A higher threshold means higher contrast areas will be sharpened, but low-contrast areas will not. Threshold: Threshold determines how much contrast there needs to be between colors for them to be sharpened. Setting the radius too high will give you weird outlines or halos around your edges. A high radius means a wider area will be sharpened. A low radius means only the pixels right next to the edge will be sharpened. Radius: This determines the area that will be sharpened. If you set the amount too high, your picture will look grainy and overly contrasty, and you'll actually lose some fine detail.
Amount determines how light the lighter pixels get, and how dark the darker pixels get. The sliders explainedĪmount: When you sharpen an image, Photoshop takes the edge between two colours and makes the light pixels lighter and the dark pixels darker. It's straightforward and doesn't give you an overload of sliders that you can work with while not really needing them. Unsharp Mask can be considered a good introduction to the sharpen filters in Photoshop. With your smart object selected, go to Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp mask. Personally I prefer using Smart Sharpen as it gives the most freedom when adjusting the settings, but we're going to be looking at Unsharp Mask first. There's two ways you could go about doing a basic sharpen filter on your gifs. We can now continue working on sharpening the gif. If done correctly, you will be left with a single layer which is now a smart object.
This will turn your layers into a Smart Object. After selecting all the layers go to “Filter > Convert for Smart Filters”. It doesn't matter if some are set to invisible. Once you've converted your timeline, select all your layers in the layer window. Make sure you are using a newer version or an extended version. If you are unable to convert to a video timeline or simply don't have this menu or the option in said menu, it means you are using the wrong version of Photoshop. If we don't do this, our gif will stop moving which we obviously don't want. We have to convert the timeline for the next step we're about to take. In this menu, click the option “Convert to Video Timeline”. On the side of your frame timeline there will be a small button which will open up a menu. Before we do this, make sure you have resized your gif to 540px wide.
